Hewlett Packard HP-85 Disassembly

Posted on August 31, 2019August 31, 2019

I decided it was time to take a closer look at a Hewlett Packard HP-85 computer that I have had stored away in my garage for the past year or so. When I first checked out this machine, it appeared to power up OK, but there was nothing being displayed on the monitor. Blindly typing in BEEP 678,90 produced the expected sounds from the internal speaker. Time to start probing…

To open the case, flip the whole computer upside-down. You may want to use a soft, clean surface to do this on to avoid scratches. There are 6 screws around the edge of the bottom of the case. Just remove and flip back over. The top shell should lift right off, exposing the innards.

I intend on posting more information as I continue to work on this amazing marvel of computing history, but here are some photos I snapped of the open computer.

Looks like the roller needs some service!
